The Rathbones host a Most Excellent New Year’s Eve Song Fest. This wonderous event involves a pot luck buffet, around 2 dozen folks who like to sing, a snug front room with enough seating for all & a TV tucked away in some grown urchin’s room for those who absolutely must watch the ball drop .
The New Year was welcomed by the Martha Burns Fantastic Pickup Kazoo Bank playing Auld Ang Syne on Elderly Instrument kazoos. You had to have been there to truly savor the moment.
Presents were passed, food was eaten & a great deal of singing was done. To keep the Dread Lyric Eater at bay some resorted to electronic gargets while most relied on the group memory to find all the words.
Bill Day lead the Kazoo Band & added an autoharp to the party instrumental mix. Paul Clayton brought his guitar as did Gypsy Jane & I but most of the singing was accompanied only by the voices of all.
Gypsy Jane & I sang “Stuck in the Smoke Hole of Our TeePee”, it was such an instant hit we had to sing it several more times as people came & went during the party. (See YouTube for OldHands music video of this humorous visit from Santa to a reservation teepee at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkwlR6EnOps.) All in all we had a grand time singing out the old year & singing in the new. But then any excuse for a singing party is a good one.
